Spread out on 243 acres of pristine land in California's most beautiful corner, Ventana Big Sur resort is encircled by the Post Creek. The dramatic Pacific coastline and forested redwood mountains set the tone of this epic place. The resort has been around since the 1970s, but after the famed Alila purchased it, they just made it even better.
Luckily for the guests, it still has the Northern California 70s vibe. So for some, it will be a visit back on the memory lane, and for others, it will be "Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood" coming to life. At least a little bit. Like the one pool that has a "clothing optional" rule. Oh, and the free condoms provided in the rooms, of course.
There are only 59 rooms available for visitors in search of a restoration break. The rustic-chic interiors calming muted colors, wood and stone surfaces, and crackling fireplaces will set you in the right mood. They have Wi-Fi to keep in touch with the outside world but don't expect much network coverage outside the premises.
Sur House is the on-site restaurant that's a short walk away on a beautiful stone path through the Redwood. There are three different pools, including a Japanese bath. Spa treatments and yoga will come as no surprise, but the real magic is outside. The guided hikes through the surrounding wilderness by Ventana is an information bomb about the native plants and wildlife.
