The Sukoon Houseboat offers an alternative experience to Kashmir's conventional hotel scene, anchored permanently on Srinagar's Dal Lake.
Unlike the hundreds of aging houseboats that line the lake's periphery, this meticulously restored five-bedroom vessel attempts to balance traditional Kashmiri craftsmanship with contemporary standards.
Built primarily from local cedar wood and adorned with carved walnut panels, the boat preserves architectural elements dating back to the 1970s when it was constructed.

Owner Altaf Chapri, whose family has operated houseboats for three generations, employs local staff who arrange excursions to nearby Mughal gardens, dawn visits to the floating vegetable market, or shikara boat (traditional wooden boats in Kashmir, seating around 6 people) trips through the lake's less-visited canals.

During winter months when temperatures drop significantly, the boat's rooms are heated – unusual among Dal Lake's floating accommodations.

The houseboat sits moored away from the main tourist areas, requiring a 10-minute shikara ride from the nearest road access point. This isolation provides relative tranquility but makes quick trips to Srinagar's old city impractical.

The stay including meals, as Sukoon positions itself at the premium end of Kashmir's accommodation spectrum – justified partly by the ongoing maintenance required to keep a wooden vessel in good condition on a weather-exposed lake.

Each of the five bedrooms contains four-poster beds and ensuite bathrooms with reliable hot water and proper plumbing – resolving the sanitation issues that plague many of the lake's older vessels.

Sun Deck

The upper deck serves as both a dining area and an observation platform, with views extending across the lake toward the Zabarwan mountain range.

Meals focus on Kashmiri lamb-heavy Wazwan cuisine, often incorporating vegetables grown in the floating gardens visible from the boat.

Shikara boats on Dal Lake
Environmental concerns around Dal Lake's houseboat industry remain significant, though Sukoon has implemented waste management systems and solar panels in an attempt to reduce its ecological impact on this fragile Himalayan watershed.
