Arriving at Jungfraujoch station there is a sign proclaiming this to be the “Top of Europe”. Operators, Jungfraubahn put the sign there being proud of the fact their railway includes the highest mainline station in Europe. Trains pull through a tunnel somehow carved out of the solid rock and arrive at an altitude of 11333ft. (3454m). This is the only way to access the Mönchsjoch Hut between March and October. For the rest of the year, the only guests are steely-eyed mountaineers. Trudge to the hut over a snow-covered glacier which is an astonishing 800 metre thick in places.
Accommodation is basic but there is no reason to stay inside not when the views are this fantastic and the mountain-based adventure never ends, from husky-rides to ice-climbing and sports climbs, there is plenty to interest the alpine enthusiast who like their accommodation warm and functional. The restaurant/bar serves hearty food to keep your energy up and the small terrace allows you to enjoy those amazing views.
