As you approach the Jugendherberge Mariastein, it feels as if you have entered the pages of a fairy-tale and are embarking upon your own medieval quest. This youth hostel is located within the walls of a 13th-century castle, perched on the cliffs overlooking Mariastein, Switzerland, near the French border. The authentic atmosphere is complete with a stately courtyard, impressive battlements, the winding staircase leading to the tower, and legendary stories of the knights and nobles that once walked the same halls.
In the 1930s, the castle was converted to house youth volunteers and now welcomes travelers from around the world. There are a total of 78 beds throughout the dormitories and private rooms. There is a shared bathroom for each dormitory, two recreation rooms that can accommodate up to 50 people, and a patio with space to barbecue and socialize. The hostel also provides free Wi-Fi and breakfast for all guests. Packed lunches and evening meals are also available for a small fee.
Situated only 15 kilometers from the town of Basel, there is a bus stop located next to the castle to allow easy access via public transport. The hostel is surrounded by forests, providing an excellent opportunity to explore the outdoor hiking and biking trails, go horseback riding, try rock climbing, or enjoy the wildlife. You can also make an easy day trip to the monastery, amusement park, several castles across the Jura plateau, and other attractions in Basel. A visit to the Mariastein Castle allows you to reconnect with nature and the hostel’s illustrious history.
