Chateau de Bagnols - Legendary 13th Century French Castle

Bagnols France West Europe

The legendary Chateau de Bagnols is the kind of place you thought only existed in fairy stories. Set in a tiny village this historic Chateau has towers and turrets, a drawbridge, and a moat. The castle has an ‘old’ and ‘new’ area. The ‘old’ area is from the 13th Century and the ‘new’ is from the 15th Century.

It is decorated in ostentatious but refined style resplendent with silver tumblers, antique marble bathrooms, and four-poster oak beds. As you would expect from a French castle, the kitchens are at the center of the building and the hotel has been designed so that you have to walk by the steam and rush en route to any other area of the hotel. The formal gardens are where you can enjoy pre-dinner drinks and the dining is the best of French cuisine without acquiescing to try-hard modern gastronomy.

When you stay here you will get a sense of what it would have been like to be a member of a European royal family enjoying a grand style of living.

Somewhere on a mountaintop above Lake George, tucked behind life-size lion statues and Gothic iron gates, sits a place that's hard to believe exists. Parador de Cardona - Sleeping in a Castle That Never Surrendered

Parador de Cardona - Sleeping in a Castle That Never Surrendered

There's a building in the Catalan countryside that spent eleven centuries refusing to fall. The Castle of Cardona, perched on a rocky promontory 460 meters (1,500 feet) above the walled town below, repelled Bourbon armies, outlasted Napoleonic sieges, and withstood the Carlists during the Spanish Civil War. Today, it's a …

Domaine des Etangs, Auberge Collection - Deep in the Charente, a Medieval Castle Reinvents Itself

Somewhere in the Charente countryside of southwest France, on a 1,000-hectare (2,500-acre) estate of forests, lakes, and open pastureland, there is a tennis court floating on a pond. There is also a 13th-century castle tower where you can sleep beneath a glass ceiling and look up at the stone ribs …

Domaine du Château des Pères - A Gorilla, a Michelin Star, and a Hotel in a Tree

There's a giant gorilla watching over the grounds. A wolf, frozen mid-sprint, tears through the woodland. And somewhere above the kitchen garden, suspended nearly 28 meters (92 feet) off the ground in a pod that looks like it belongs in a 1970s science fiction paperback, someone is waking up to …

Hocus Pocus Tiny Hotel, York - Where the Medieval Gets Mystical

Down a narrow alley just behind the Shambles, easy to miss if you don't know it's there, Hocus Pocus Tiny Hotel is the kind of place that makes you wonder whether you've accidentally wandered into a film set. A Grade II listed medieval building with timber beams, creaking stairs, and …

Victorian Mansion at Los Alamos - Sleep in a Cadillac, Wake Up in Wonderland

In the tiny wine country town of Los Alamos, population barely 2,000, sits a hotel so wonderfully eccentric it makes the Madonna Inn look restrained. From the outside, the Victorian Mansion looks like any other stately 19th-century home. Step inside, and you'll find yourself tumbling down a rabbit hole of …

Auberge Aux 4 Vents - The Swiss Hotel Where You Can Take a Bath Outdoors - From the Second Floor

Between Fribourg's medieval rooftops and a park full of century-old beeches, a renovated 17th-century manor is doing something quietly remarkable. Auberge aux 4 Vents is not a boutique hotel in the algorithmic sense - all reclaimed wood and oat milk. It is something older and stranger: a patrician country manor …

Hana-Maui Resort, a Destination by Hyatt Residence - The Far Side of Maui

Most resorts want you to stay on property. Hana-Maui Resort wants you to stay in a different way entirely - unhurried, untethered, and largely offline. Rooms here have no televisions, no alarm clocks, and in some cases no radios. The spa uses heated lava rocks and Hawaiian healing traditions that …
